How Ledger Live access actually works

Three deliberate steps stand between an idle computer and your assets. Each one exists so that a stolen file, a leaked password or a convincing email is never enough on its own.

    Install from the official source only

    Download Ledger Live directly from the manufacturer's own website or a verified app store listing. Search ads and shortened links are the most common way people end up with a copy that looks right and is not.

    Unlock the app, then the device

    Your Ledger Live password protects the session on that machine, while the PIN you enter on the hardware device unlocks the private keys. Both are local: the app password is stored on your computer, not on a server you cannot see.

    Approve on the screen, every time

    Addresses, amounts and network fees appear on the device display. Read them there before you approve, and reject anything that looks unfamiliar. An approval you did not make is the signal to stop and investigate.

Wallet access

Access is granted by possession of the device plus knowledge of the PIN. There is no cloud account to reset, which is why a forgotten PIN is recovered with the recovery phrase, not with an email link.

Account security

Use a long, unique app password stored in a password manager and lock the screen when you step away. The password guards the session on your computer; it never travels to a server.

Device management

Install official firmware and application updates when Ledger Live offers them; genuine releases are signed and verified on the device. Keep one primary device and treat any second one as a copy needing the same discipline.

Transaction verification

Compare the recipient address on the device screen with the one you intended to pay. Malware can rewrite what a browser shows; it cannot rewrite what the hardware displays.

Privacy

Public blockchains are transparent, so privacy comes from keeping your identity separate from your addresses and from sharing balances only when you choose to. Prefer your own node or a trusted provider you have thought about.

Asset protection

Split risk: a device for everyday amounts, a second for long-term holdings, and no seed phrase typed anywhere except the device itself or the app used to restore it.

  • Type the manufacturer's address yourself instead of clicking a search advert.
  • Write the recovery phrase on paper or metal, and store it offline.
  • Read the address and amount on the device display before approving.
  • Update Ledger Live and firmware when a genuine release appears.
  • Test with a small amount the first time you send to a new address.

Never

  • Enter your recovery phrase on a website, in a chat or in a support form.
  • Photograph the words or keep them in cloud notes or email.
  • Trust a "validation", "sync" or "migration" page you were sent to.
  • Approve a transaction you did not start, however small it looks.
  • Share screen recordings of the app or device while the phrase is visible.

Questions people ask before they log in

Is there a Ledger Live account I sign into online?

No. Ledger Live runs on your own computer or phone and unlocks locally. There is no web login where a username and password grant access to assets, which is exactly why a page asking you to "log in" with your recovery phrase is a red flag.

I forgot my app password. Can it be reset?

You can reset the app password from within Ledger Live by following the on-screen recovery flow, which asks you to reconnect the device. Resetting the app password does not touch your keys; if the device PIN is lost, the recovery phrase is the only way back.

Does Ledger Live work in a browser?

The desktop and mobile apps are the supported clients, and the mobile app can be used with Bluetooth on supported devices. Anything claiming to be a browser-based login for your hardware wallet should be treated as untrusted.

Will support ever ask for my recovery phrase or PIN?

Never. Neither a support agent nor a firmware update needs those values. Anyone who asks for them, or who offers to "unlock" or "validate" your wallet, is attempting theft — end the conversation.

How do I know a Ledger Live download is genuine?

Go to the manufacturer's official domain, check that the page uses HTTPS, and prefer the signed package for your platform. Updates offered inside the app are verified on the device before they install.
